As I was reading in the book of mormon this morning, I was thinking of the savior and how he would act in tough situations and this is how it would happen. He would be merciful to all, he wept for them, he prayed for them, and he blessed them.

Today Abigail and i went on a drive through Fujairah. We had a delightful time. She is so fun to have in the car. Her personality is a welcome relief after a tough day at school. We went in side a villa (house) which was just being completed. It was enormous. We looked around together and decided that we really thought it would be a fun place to be. We kept driving to other places. We drove by our old home. Abigail wanted to stop by and see her friend that we used to live by, but it was time to go home.

It's been quite a while since I last wrote on my blog. The call to prayers our going on right now and I'm getting ready to out with Amy and get something to eat.

Today we went to Winn's Mountain. The have a new archaeological site at the base of the mountain. Ya know as soon as you name a mountain after the family uninvited guest show up. Well that's life in the UAE.

John spent most of his time on my back. It's a fun hike just long enough to get you tired, but not too long to make you dislike it.

After that we went to KFC to get something to eat. Then we went to the new corniche. We had a great time playing on the slides on climbing, racing, and just having a good time.

This chapter helped me think about prayer and how important prayer is. It also made me thing about what is prayer, how does it work, what does it do to us when we pray. I was thinking about an account that one of the Apostles gave of Jesus in Gethsemany and how Jesus prayed. Why did Jesus pray? He had all power. In this chapter, Nephi prayer and the voice of the Lord comes to him. I'm going to find more out more about prayer.

The chapter also talked about the rising generation. What is the rising generation? Why does the rising generation fall away so quickly?

Justification of not living a good life is what I was thinking about as I read today in the Book of Mormon. Also, about how the world will try to explain things away. The reasons things happen is because of something such as the devil is doing this. Or they are trying to take away our freedom. Their trying to bind us into believing a certain way. They want to have controll over us. All of these are excusses in not living the commandments.

Samual talks about the coming of the Lord and how we need to repent. He also says that men are free to choose. And this gift is choose is a gift from Heavenly Father. Also Heavely Father gives us knowledge. So when we choose evil it's our own choose. We have the power to choose good.

Samual the Lamanite is preaching to the people about repentance, really preaching. The part of the scripture that I like was at the end of the chapter where he says "You have sought for happiness in doing iniquity, which thing is contrary to the nature of that righteousness which is in our great and Eternal Head." I guess happiness only comes from living like God. It's a part of our DNA.

Coleslaw

Chinese_Chicken_Salad

Coleslaw
1 large head cabbage, shredded
1 tsp salt
Dash pepper
½ tsp dry mustard
2 Tbs. sugar
1 Tbs. onion (1/4 tsp. dry)
2 Tbs. seasoned vinegar
½ cup mayo
Toss together and refrigerate 3 hours.

Chinese Chicken Salad

1 lb. chicken
1-2 Napa cabbage heads
4 green onions (or so)
¼ cup sliced/slivered almonds
2 Tbsp sesame seeds
1 package oriental noodles (oriental flavor is the best, but chicken is also very good and I can find it easier)
Dressing:
¼ cup oil (canola)
2 Tbsp rice wine vinegar (or similar)
2 Tbsp sugar
Seasoning packet from noodles
Salt and pepper
Cook chicken and shred or cut into small pieces, place in a large salad bowl. Slice Napa cabbage (can also use regular cabbage, this is just a bit tastier), wash and shake dry. Slice onions and add to cabbage and chicken. Add almonds and sesame seeds (I sometimes don’t use these). Crunch the noodles into small chunks and pieces with your hands and add to the salad. Whisk all the ingredients for the dressing. Just before serving, pour dressing over entire salad and toss for quite a bit until the salad is completely covered. It should start to wilt just a bit, so if the salad is falling out of the bowl, the more it is coated with dressing, the more it settles. The true recipe calls for 4 times the ingredients, but I find it’s way too much. I played with this recipe a lot to find this much dressing works well and my kids LOVE this as a meal.

It's been around 75 years since King Benjamin gave his address to the people. The reign of judges, a new form of government, has been in place for 40 years.

Chapter 1 in Heleman gives us an example of what happens to a nation, a group of people or family if there is contentions in us. Jesus taught "there shall be no disputations among you" and "he that hath the spirit of contention is not of me"

Nephites enter difficult years. Pahoran dies Choosing a new Chief Judge from his sons brings politics turmoil, unrest, and disorder (contention) to the Nephite government. This unrest and disorder is caused by Paanchi's (Son of Pahoran) lost election to become Chief Judge an his quest for power and authority over the people. In anger (wroth) and in rebellion against the voice of the people, Paanchi seeks to destroy the liberty of the people. Paanchi devisive uprising diverts and weakens the government from protecting the Nephite people against exteral danger. The government is now using it resources to protecting the voice and liberties of the people.

The lesson I learn is that if we have contention in our homes we become less prepared to handle any outside problems. Such as death in the family, worldlyness, illness, sin.

In a Sunday (Friday) schools lesson, we were asked how do we stop contention in the home. At the time I did not know, but this morning I thought of the priesthood and being a good righteous priesthood holder and the qualities you need. I believe these qualities help stop contention in the home.

41 [by] persuasion, by long-suffering, by gentleness and meekness, and by love unfeigned;

42 By kindness, and pure knowledge, which shall greatly enlarge the soul without hypocrisy, and without eguile—

43 Reproving betimes with sharpness, when moved upon by the Holy Ghost; and then showing forth afterwards an increase of love toward him whom thou hast reproved, lest he esteem thee to be his enemy;

Winns Travel to the UAE

We woke up at 3:00 in the morning in order to arrive at the airport on time to catch our flight to Dubai. What a trip! We had two stops along the way--one in New York and the other in Greece. The best part of the trip was seeing New York and the Greek islands from our airplane. New York's Central Park was engulfed by buildings which made the park look like a rectangular fortress. The Greek islands looked so relaxing and isolated. A place you go to get lost and are perfectly fine never finding your way back. Boats randomly crisscrossed between each island drawing a long white wake behind them. From the airplane, you could only wonder about the boats occupants and their destinations.

Before we reached New York, we swooped around then descended downward and just before landing we could see the manicured back yards of stately colonial houses. These houses reminded us of the movie Sabrina and people who live in a different world from ours.

We landed safely in New York and as usual for New York we had to wait for our plane to be taxied to a different gate. We were a nervous because our next fight was departing, but fortunately we made the connection.

From New York, we flew to Athens. We were dead tired walking through the Greece airport. To make matters worse we had a six hour layover.

In the airport, we found a restaurant which had long soft couches Being incuspicuious as possible we made are way towards them in exhausted despration. They were sure soft! All the kids crashed on them. We looked so at of place in the restaurant, but it didn't matter the sofas so comfortable.

From Greece, we traveled to Dubai. The two previous fights service were lousy at best. We boarded Emirates Airline and we felt like we had walked into first class comfort. The kids each got treats and toys and the flight attendants actually talked to us and were interested in our comfort. To say the least we were flying in style. It was just good to end the trip in comfort.

At the Dubai Airport, Johnson picked us up and we traveled by bus to Fujairah. We thank our Heavely Father for a save trip home.

Forgiveness

For scripture night, Kaylee gave her Primary talk on forgivness. Her talk was about W.W. Phelps and Joseph Smith friendship. At a later time, W.W. Phelps did many things to Josheph which caused him great pain. Joseph forgave W.W. Phelps. Amy told a story the President Hinckely gave in conference about forgiveness. The kids felt the power of forgiveness.

We went to Khor Fokhann today. Enjoyed just getting out and swimming in the ocean.

We had a wonderful time yesterday. I put the kids into the car (Galloper) and we went to Ras Al Khaimah. We went to the Hilton were. We enjoyed the sun, pool, and beach. Clayton and I swam out to the buoy. The salt water is great for my skin. We tried to touch the bottom and boy it was cold down at the bottom. We stopped at McDonald's on the way there. We sure enjoyed the fat food. I think it's our third time in the last year and a half that we have eaten at a fast food restaurant. Here are some pictures.

It's our first anniversary in Fujairah. Yep, we've been here a year, but who's counting. Last February 28th, we arrived in the UAE so here are the top ten things we've done as a family: 1. Dune Bashing and Sand Boarding, 2. Snorkeling at Snoopy Island in the Indian Ocean, 3. Fort Exploring, 4. Traveling through the Empty Quarter 5. Snow skiing in Dubai 6. Today Mom called...it was very early in the morning. She talked to Amy about coming to Fujairah a little earlier than planned. I think they will be coming in December. It will be great to have them here. The kids are really looking forward to them coming. We'll have to plan out what we want to do. Yesterday we went to brunch with a Sian's Family; she teaches with me at the HCT. Her husband is a philosophy and religion teacher so of course we had a lively discussion about religion. He was quite interesting to listen to.

Elder Kimball wrote back to his son. In 1947 Elder Spencer W. Kimball received a letter from his son Andrew, who was serving a full-time mission. Andrew wrote: “I told one fellow … that I knew of the truthfulness of what I told him, and said that the Holy Ghost had borne witness of it to me. … When I thought about it later I was a little concerned that I should do such a thing.” Because of his concern he said, “I’ve carefully avoided bearing my testimony to anyone beyond the point of saying ‘I feel, I believe, etc.’ ” “I think I know exactly how you felt,” he said, “for I went through the same experience in my mission. I wanted to be very honest with myself and with the program and with the Lord. This is a story by Elder Packer that helps me understand repentence. Now, if you suppose some of you because of mistakes you have already made, think that you have lost your future. Let me in conclusion teach you this—one more inoculation:
For a number of years I found relaxation in carving and painting songbirds, at times spending a full year on a single carving. That suggests how much time I had now and again. Once I had a newly finished carving on the back seat of a car driven by Elder A. Theodore Tuttle. He hit the brakes suddenly and the carving was thrown to the floor and damaged.
Elder Tuttle felt terrible, supposing he had ruined a year’s work. When I waved aside his apologies, he said, “You sure don’t seem to be upset about it.” To reassure him, I said “Don’t worry, I made it; I can fix it.” Actually it had been broken and fixed many times while I was working on it.
Later Brother Tuttle likened that experience to lives, broken or badly damaged, supposedly ruined with no hope of repair, not knowing that there is a Maker, a Creator, who can fix any of his creations no matter how hopelessly broken they seem to be.

Since coming to Fujairah, a coupe of thoughts have crept into my mind. What we are is a matter birth and who we are is a matter of choice. The UAE is a cosmopolitan country. People from all over the world, from India to Indonsia come to work. Why is it that someone from say Pakastan gets paid less than me because I'm an American. The odds are against so many people.

Priesthood

Introduction

Brothers and sister it is good to be with you this morning. As mentioned, my name is Chris Winn and recently we have moved from the US to Fujairah, If a may, I like to introduce my family. My wife’s name is Amy and we have six children: Clayton, Isaac, Kaylee, Jacob, Abigail, and John. You might of seen us come in late a couple of times. Being new, we’ve had poor luck in finding the church. ; however, today is a banner day: we made it on our first try.
Before I begin my talk, I’d like to thank my Heavenly Father for protecting and watching over my family as we travel outside of the US for the first time as a family.
We must have been quite a site when we arrived at the Dubai Airport at 3 a.m. Two exhausted parents, six dazed kids, and twenty-four pieces of luggage. Since our arrival, and maybe like some of you, we have experienced many changes: From Pine Trees to Palm Trees, Dollar to Dirham, English to Arabic, and how Thursday is a special day it’s the day we get ready for Friday, and in some ways, Amy and I have experienced Charles Dickens novel The Tale of Two Cities. His opening paragraph reads. It was the best of times; it was the worst of times. However, we would not want to replace the many rewarding experiences we have enjoyed during the past three months.

Start Talk

Today, I want to share with you my thoughts and my testimony of the Priesthood. To do this I would like to use the same method a journalist would use in preparing an article or paper, by asking the questions WHAT, HOW, WHO and WHY.

What

The first question is "What is the Priesthood": President James E. Faust said, the priesthood is "Power and authority delegated by God to act in His name for the salvation of His children. [President Faust went on to say,] Caring for others is the very essence of [the] priesthood. It is the power to bless, to heal and to administer the saving ordinances of the gospel." The second part of President Faust definition of the priesthood helps me clearly and tangibly understand the mission of the priesthood which is to care, bless, heal, and administer to our Heavenly Fathers children.

Who

The second question a journalist might ask is: who is able to receive the priesthood. The Gospel Principle Manual describes who is able to receive the priesthood. It say’s "The Lord has prepared an orderly way for his priesthood to be given to his sons on the earth. A worthy male member of the Church receives the priesthood "by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof. In the New Testament we read of a man named Simon who lived when Christ’s Apostles presided over the Church. Simon became converted and was baptized into the Church. But Simon did not have the priesthood. Simon knew that the Apostles and the other priesthood leaders of the Church had the true power of God." [end quote] In the New Testament it tells us how Simon tried to erroneously receive the priesthood. In Acts Chapter 8 starting with verse 13 it say’s "Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done. And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money. Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money." Simon did not understand the priesthood. The priesthood is based on the principles of righteousness. Joseph Smith taught us that the priesthood is governed by gentleness, meekness, long-suffering, and love unfeigned.

How

The third question is: How do we use the priesthood. This question may be answered by simply putting into action the words President Faust used to describe the priesthood: He said, caring is the essence of the priesthood. One of my first experiences as a Priesthood Holder came as a Home Teacher. I was assigned to be with Brother Smedley, an Elder in the ward. A week before our first home teaching visit, he called me to give the names of the families that we would be visiting and the times of each appointment. The following week, Brother Smedely picked me up and we visited each family. During the visits I said very little, if anything at all. I just listened. Brother Smedley did most of the talking. After our visits Brother Smedely dropped me off, but just as I was about close the car door and run into the house to get something to eat. He said seven words that caused me trepidation and great anxiety. He pointed to the Ensign which layed on the car's dashboard and said "will you give the lesson next month." In my mind I quickly thought about the two families that we just visited. The first home teaching visit was to a single member; a member who had not participated in church activities for many years. During our visit, he spent most of the time fixing his motorcycle in his garage as he half heartily listen to our conversation. The second family, the Hidden’s, were a part member family. The father, who had a professional appearance, was not a member, but his wife came to church frequently. As I thought about the two families I would be teaching, I wanted to say "no" to Brother Smedely's question, but the word "yes" came out of my mouth.
Next month came and I found myself sitting in the Hidden’s home. After few minutes of small talk, Brother Smedely looked at me and then at Mr. and Mrs. Hidden and said, "Brother Winn will be giving our home teaching lesson." I do not remember the lesson I gave that day in the Hidden’s home. I’m sure the lesson was short and disjointed, but because of Brother Smedely ,who, gave me, a timid and shy Teacher in the Aaronic Priesthood the opportunity to fulfill my responsibility and obey a commandment that the Lord gives to all teachers in the aaronic priesthood, which is, "The teacher’s duty is to watch over the church always, and be with and strengthen them;" As I left the Hidden’s home I felt a great sense of relief, at least for another two months, but more importantly, I felt that I had magnified my priesthood by helping someone else.

Why

The final question a journalist might ask is why? Why the priesthood? We might have answered this with the previous questions, but for me the priesthood helps me understand the importance of being a good husband and father, and also the consequences of not being a righteous husband and father.
As a family we have traveled half-way around the world. We’ve traded Pine Trees for Palm Trees, Dollar for Dirham, and English for Arabic, but what we haven’t traded is the priesthood of our Heavenly Father. This was made clear to me as we held our first sacrament meeting in Fujairah. As we blessed the sacrament that Friday evening, my testimony of the priesthood was strengthened by knowing that we received a priesthood ordinance that would bless my family.
